Food for thought

Food is an essential part of life. But do we simply eat to satisfy or hunger or are we stopping to think about our bodies many nutritional requirements? I went through life for the first 23 years without really thinking about how the food that I put in my body affected the way I felt. By the time I was 23 I had IBS, was constantly tired and my mood was low. Then I went to India. ‘Delhi belly’ did not help matters I can assure you! But whilst I was there, I became vegetarian, started practising yoga, and made a commitment to improving my health. When I came back I began researching nutrition, and I heard about the raw food movement and ‘superfoods’. I started to eat mainly raw foods and decided to set up a company selling superfoods, thanks to a chance connection I made when in India with a Portuguese health enthusiast who was starting a company in Portugal and was looking for partners wound Europe. In 2010 Iswari was born, and my health grew from strength to strength as I embarked on a journey into raw food and superfoods.

I learnt that the body needs hydration, nutrition, and fibre to function properly. We need minerals, many of which are deficient in our over-worked European soil. Conventional agriculture has stripped away nutrients from our soils, and is relying on chemicals to grow our food, many of which are toxic to our health and to the environment. I committed to only buying and selling organic products where possible. I saw amazing results as my IBS disappeared, my energy levels returned and superfoods became more in more recognised in Ireland as a valuable contribution to our wellbeing. Superfoods such as Spirulina, Chlorella and Wheatgrass are rich in Chlorophyll, the ‘blood of the plants’. They provide an abundance of Iron, Magnesium, Calcium, and even Vitamin B12. They are extremely rich in digestible protein that doesn’t tax our system, and even contain compounds that help us to utilise this protein such as Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF). They also remove heavy metals and toxins from our bodies.

heavy metals and toxins from our bodies.

I learnt the importance of a low-glycemic diet. Food that does not contain processed sugars keeps our mood and energy levels stable. These processed sugars can strip our bodies of nutrients and leave us addicted to their sweet sensations. For anyone who needs their health and fitness for sports, or even just to partake in today’s busy modern world, it is so important to eat well, and be in-tune with the needs of our bodies. Although this can be daunting, there has never been a time when this information has been more freely available than it is today. The internet is bursting with healthy recipes and nutritional tips that are simple and fun to incorporate into our lives.
