Constipation on holiday and holiday blues: the best natural remedies

Holidays can put a strain on intestinal regularity, but even on the return we may suffer from constipation. How can travel constipation and how can the holiday blues be solved?

We have all suffered from constipation at least once during a trip. In fact, constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders that affects us during our holidays or when we travel, even for work. It is considered an occasional travel constipation and can also affect people who normally have no bowel or evacuation problems.

Causes of travel constipation

We can talk about actual constipation when we cannot evacuate for more than three days in a row. Usually the problem does not persist for more than 4 or 5 days at most, but if it lasts more than a week it is better to seek medical advice. Constipation occurs because the colon, irritated by different factors, is unable to expel the stool.

Why does constipation occur during a trip or on holiday? Travelling, in general, implies a change in the rhythms of our organism and therefore also in the biological clock that regulates hunger and the stimulus to evacuate.

Moreover, often during a trip it is difficult to use the bathroom as soon as you feel the need, causing a forcing that affects the normal rhythms. On holiday, we can drink less water, drink too much alcohol, derail our diet and suffer from disorders such as jet lag, which affect digestive functions and the speed of metabolism. Basically, dehydration and an unbalanced diet are the most common causes of travel constipation.

What is the holiday blues?

It's also called "holiday blues", and it's a mild re-entry depression. It can affect people who travel a lot and often, who go on holiday for very long periods of time or who return from the holiday in an abrupt way. The sudden changes of return are similar to those that cause travel constipation, and constipation is precisely one of the most obvious and common symptoms of this condition.

In addition to constipation, re-entry syndrome can cause depressed mood, anxiety, fatigue, headache, nausea, swelling and an irritated colon. The causes of this re-entry syndrome are the sudden changes in the rhythms of life, metabolism and circadian rhythm.

What are the natural remedies for travel constipation and holiday blues?

In order to prevent holiday constipation, to fight it, and to treat the holiday blues, the rules are very simple, and they are the same:

  • Avoid dehydration: the first thing we are inclined to do when we change our rhythms is to drink less. Make sure you always drink enough water!
  • Physical exercise: sedentary lifestyle is bad on holiday, as well as at home. Physical activity releases endorphins and reactivates the metabolism.
  • A balanced and regular diet: Eat at regular intervals, avoid fried foods, saturated fats, alcohol and sweets in excessive quantities, and put enough fibre, minerals and vitamins into your diet. How?
