Water is life: why we must no longer waste it, nor pollute it

If there is a natural element that makes us immediately think about life, it is definitely water. We look for it on the other planets to understand if there are possible forms of life, we drink it and unfortunately, we waste a lot of it, and we pollute even more.

Life on our Planet originated from water. When the climate on Earth settled down, and became temperate, the first forms of life originated in water. At that time the whole planet was covered by water, then over the millennia, the mainland emerged, and with it the first living beings on Earth. A few million years later, we humans arrived.

One of the main problems of our times, if not the most important ever, is pollution. When we talk about it, we immediately think about air pollution, cars, smokestacks that emit smoke, big cities. But the biggest problem is water pollution.

We are about to reach 8 billion human beings. Each of us must be able to drink at least one litre of drinking water a day in order to survive. According to the NGO Amref, more than 2 billion people in the world do not have access to drinking water.

The distribution of the planet's water resources is naturally irregular, in the sense that due to their geological conformation, some areas are richer than others. But it is poverty and the distribution of world wealth that is the biggest problem. In many countries, in fact, there is water, but there is a lack of infrastructure.

In other cases, instead, the problem is the waste of water. It is thought that in some European countries, such as Italy, 50% of drinking water is lost, wasted. Defective pipes and pipelines, poor maintenance and the daily habits of citizens all have a huge impact.

We have to think that every flush in our bathroom discharges at least 20 litres of drinking water into the black water. To wash dishes or take a shower, we can waste several dozen or a hundred litres. Water is fundamental to the human body, and we can no longer afford to waste it or pollute it.

Human activity releases millions of tons of pollutants into the water, such as plastics, microplastics and chemicals of various kinds. This is a huge problem for the environment, and consequently also for our availability of drinking water, which is decreasing from year to year.

Food also has a huge impact on the consumption of drinking water. To produce only 5kg of meat you need as much water as an average family consumes in a year - 500,000 litres! 70% of the water used on Earth is used by animal breeding and agriculture, the majority of whose products are used to feed farm animals.

That is why the consumption of animal proteins in the current proportions to which we are accustomed is not sustainable. It's not good for the planet, just as it's not good for us. Choosing to consume vegetable proteins is an act of responsibility towards the environment and for our health.

At Iswari, we are committed to not wasting water in the production of our products, but also in our daily lives. That’s why our products are all vegans, sustainable and some of them they are Fairtrade too. Spreading the values of a healthy and sustainable diet also includes for us the struggle for a fairer distribution of resources, including water. Support us too!
