What to eat for an afternoon snack? The best energy snacks

What to eat for an afternoon snack? The best energy snacks

It's 4 p.m.: your concentration drops, you have your head in the clouds, your eyes are foggy, your stomach is groaning, and dinner seems so far away. At that point you need a snack, and immediately think of tasty, sugary and fat snacks. But you'd end up feeling even worse. So what to eat as an afternoon snack?

If you want to fight the collapse of afternoon energy, you should first understand what it depends on. There are many possible factors. Common causes of fatigue include a few hours of sleep, dehydration, excess carbohydrates and sugars at breakfast, caffeine dependence and abuse of animal proteins in the diet.

But when hunger grips you, you need a healthy, energetic snack to regain your strength and get through to the evening. Whether you're at work, at the office, at home or at school, what should you eat for a snack in the afternoon?

That's what you shouldn't eat for a snack:

  • Avoid unhealthy packaged snacks: they are very tempting, we know that. But snacks full of chocolate, caramel and cream are also full of sugar and "bad fats". The result would be a glycemic peak and then a collapse of blood sugar. You would be even sleepier if you ate them!
  • Coffee: A lot of people think they can do without food and only survive with one - or more coffees. But coffee has many side effects: it makes people nervous, increases anxiety, removes concentration and does not nourish at all.

What to eat as a snack for an afternoon energy boost:

  • Fruits and vegetables: you can bring with you a container with seasonal vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, chili peppers and a portion of hummus, tofu, tempeh, vegetable yogurt or a sauce, maybe made with avocado. Or a fresh fruit, like a banana.
  • Dried fruits: almonds, hazelnuts, but also dates, goji berries, cocoa beans and Inca berries are perfect foods to eat for a snack. They offer "good fats", natural sugars, proteins and lot of energy.
  • Healthy Energy Bars: they must not have added sugars, unsaturated fats such as those of palm oil, they must be gluten-free, without too many carbohydrates and rich in vitamins and minerals.
