How to detox your skin from the inside out

Skin detox pelle

There is much talk of detox: many use this term to sell miraculous products, while for others it does not even exist. So how can we detoxify and purify the skin? Discover the truth and how to get pure skin!

Let’s make some clarity: the term “detox” derives from medicine and describes the medical treatment of people with potentially lethal addictions. In fact, in these cases, toxins accumulate and the body can not expel them. Therefore, serious medical intervention must be used. A healthy body, non-intoxicated by drugs, has an innate detoxification system.

Our organism has the kidneys, the liver, the skin, and even the lungs that can continually detoxify us. We sweat, urinate and breathe to expel toxins that our body produces through the metabolism of food and many other natural chemical processes. But we can’t say we live in a completely pure world and we are 100% healthy.

We start from two assumptions: the environment in which we live is increasingly polluted and our lifestyles are mostly unhealthy. That said, we can imagine how much more work our detoxification organs have to endure with. The liver has to withstand large doses of alcohol, saturated and drugs, while the lungs must filter fine powders, heavy metals and often even cigarette smoke.

Even those who lead a healthy lifestyle, are exposed to pollutants of the outside world and we can well understand now why our body needs a good “wash”; not only external, but also from the inside out. The same applies to the skin: we are talking about one of our most important organs, which acts as a barrier against external attacks and helps us to retain body fluids. For the external cleaning of the skin we can rely on natural detergents and delicate soaps, but how can we cleanse the skin from the inside?

Detox of the skin: what to eat?

There are no magic formulas to cleanse the skin: we must adopt a healthy and active lifestyle. Sweating is very good for the skin and promotes the expulsion of toxins. A nice jogging or a sauna could greatly improve the health of the skin. Nutrition is crucial too, and we must include these good habits:

  • Drink enough water
  • Avoid carbonated and sweetened drinks
  • Avoid refined sugars
  • Limit saturated fats to a minimum
  • Prefer unsaturated fats
  • Eat fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables
  • Avoid complex foods, such as fried foods
  • Eat fibres such as legumes and whole grain cereals
  • Limit or avoid consumption of animal proteins
  • Integrate antioxidants in the diet

Where can we find antioxidants? Blueberries, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, but also apples, pears, strawberries, melons, apricots and grapes are high in antioxidants. But the queen of antioxidants is Chlorophyll, a substance similar to hemoglobin, produced by plants to ensure photosynthesis and obtain energy from the Sun. Capable of protecting ourselves from inflammation and binding heavy metals for their expulsion, it is present in all vegetables with green leaves and algae. What are the foods that contain the most antioxidants?

Chlorella: it is a freshwater alga rich in chlorophyll. Algae grow at high depths and have to work hard to reach sunlight. That’s why they produce chlorophyll in very high quantities! Rich in vitamins and salts, it is perfect for a healthy and natural skin detox.
